Final Reflection

Participating in the International Scholars Program fundamentally changed how I view my place in the world. Rather than simply exposing me to different cultures, ISP challenged me to reflect on how global experiences shape the way I think, communicate, and pursue opportunities. Through a combination of studying abroad, participating in internationally focused campus events, and working as a Study Abroad Peer Advisor, I developed a deeper sense of cultural awareness, confidence, and curiosity that now influences both my personal life and my professional goals.

One of the most important lessons I gained through ISP was learning how to adapt in unfamiliar environments. When I studied abroad in Madrid, everyday activities suddenly required a new level of patience and flexibility. Navigating public transportation, ordering food, and communicating in Spanish forced me to think creatively and rely on problem-solving skills I had practiced academically but had rarely applied in real life. At first, these situations felt overwhelming, but over time, they helped me become more comfortable navigating uncertainty. That shift changed how I approach challenges today; instead of avoiding unfamiliar situations, I now view them as opportunities to grow.

My role as a Study Abroad Peer Advisor reinforced this perspective. In this position, I frequently meet students who are excited about studying abroad but hesitant to take the first step. Because I experienced those same uncertainties myself, I can guide them with both confidence and empathy. Whether I am helping a student compare programs, discussing how to adjust to a new culture, or encouraging them to apply for scholarships, I have learned that small moments of guidance can make a significant difference. This role helped me realize that global engagement is not only about personal development, but it also involves helping others gain the confidence to pursue opportunities that broaden their worldview.

Furthermore, ISP deepened my understanding of cultural expression by exposing me to perspectives I may not have encountered otherwise. For example, attending Selma Green’s talk on Tove Jansson and the legacy of the Moomins introduced me to the role storytelling plays within Finnish culture. What initially seemed like a discussion about literature became a reflection on how art, imagination, and history shape national identity. Similarly, seeing traditional Ghanaian clothing on display at the Harn Museum highlighted how fashion can communicate heritage, craftsmanship, and community values. Moments like these encouraged me to think more critically about how culture influences the ways people express themselves.

Another meaningful outcome of my ISP journey has been my newfound love of learning languages. Through studying Italian and Spanish, and later becoming inspired to begin learning German after another study abroad experience, I realized that language is one of the most powerful tools for building connections across cultures. Learning new languages has allowed me to understand different ways of thinking and communicating while also reminding me of the patience required to truly listen and engage with others. This realization has been especially meaningful as I consider my future career in marketing, where communication and storytelling play a central role. Understanding language and culture allows marketers to connect with audiences in ways that feel authentic and meaningful.

The most significant change ISP created in my life was the confidence it helped me build. Before participating in these opportunities, I often questioned whether I was capable of adapting to unfamiliar environments or pursuing experiences that felt intimidating. Living and studying abroad showed me that I could successfully navigate challenges and grow through them. After returning from Spain, I felt motivated to pursue opportunities that previously felt out of reach. I joined marketing consulting groups within my major and decided to add a Master’s Degree in International Business to my academic path.

These decisions reflect a broader shift in how I approach challenges. Instead of seeing uncertainty as something to avoid, I now see it as a chance to learn, connect with new perspectives, and expand my understanding of the world. This mindset will continue to guide me as I pursue a career in marketing that involves engaging with audiences across different cultures and regions.

Ultimately, the International Scholars Program did more than introduce me to new perspectives- it transformed the way I approach learning, communication, and opportunity. It encouraged me to remain curious, engage with different viewpoints, and seek experiences that challenge me to grow both personally and professionally.
